Unearthing the Relationship Between Women Living in Mining Areas and Their Political Participation in Indonesia: The Dataset
This study examines the impact of mining industries on women’s political participation in Indonesia. Mining regions, often characterized by male-dominated labor structures and economic dependency on extractive industries, create socio-political barriers that limit women’s engagement in formal politics and decision-making processes. This research investigates how the presence of mining activities influences women’s political agency, leadership opportunities, and representation in local governance. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes national-level electoral data to compare women’s political participation in mining and non-mining districts. Additionally, qualitative case studies from selected mining regions explore the socio-economic and institutional constraints faced by women in pursuing political roles. Key factors examined include patriarchal norms, economic reliance on extractive industries, environmental activism, and policy frameworks that either enable or restrict women’s political involvement. The results indicate that while mining regions present significant structural barriers to women’s political participation, they also serve as spaces for emerging grassroots mobilization, particularly in environmental advocacy and community governance. This research contributes to the broader discourse on gender and resource politics by providing policy recommendations to enhance women’s representation in extractive economies.

People-centered Policy: Applying Social Design to Social Research & Evidence-based Policy

Friday, 25 July 2025 – Atma Jaya Institute of Public Policy in collaboration with Center for Urban Studies Universitas Pembangunan Jaya have successfully held the public seminar “People-centered Policy: Applying Social Design to Social Research & Evidence-based Policy” at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya, Semanggi. This event is attended by academics from various universities, researchers, and government officials. Dr. Deng’s Presentation As the keynote speaker, Dr. Jian-bang Deng an expert from Tamkang University, Taiwan, presented a comprehensive exploration on how social design can inform more humane and inclusive migration policies. Using data on migration flows before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Deng showcased how global and regional migration trends have shifted, along with the social and economic narratives surrounding them. Dr. Deng emphasized that future policies must recognize migrants as agents of development, advocating for a shift toward people-centered migration policies that are built upon lived experiences, social realities, and dignity. These human-centered frameworks are essential for building resilient, diverse, and socially sustainable cities in the face of continued migration and urbanization. Case StudyFollowing the presentation, participants engaged in a collaborative case study session, where they were divided into three groups. Each group explored real-life urban issues in Jakarta using a social design lens; identifying social patterns, problems, and proposing people-driven policy ideas. The discussions ranged from public mobility challenges, accessibility of transportation, to waste management and other broader urban life issues in Jakarta. Using a quadrant-based mapping approach—measuring potential impact and level of uncertainty—each group identified pressing social issues and evaluated them based on feasibility and urgency. This process allowed participants to prioritize problems that are not only high in impact but also manageable in terms of uncertainty. Based on these insights, groups developed preliminary policy recommendations grounded in social design principles, emphasizing participatory and human-centered approaches to improve urban living.

Melonjak Drastis, 605 Politisi Dinasti Mengikuti Pilkada Serentak 2024

Protest under Duress at Université Laval, Quebec, Canada

Dr. Muhammad Fajar, research fellow Institute for Advanced Research Unika Atma Jaya, berpartisipasi dalam workshop Protest under Duress yang berlangsung pada 30-31 Oktober 2024 di Quebec, Kanada. Ia mempresentasikan tulisannya yang berjudul The Variety of Social Movement Strategies under Democratic Backsliding: Evidence from Indonesia.
Indonesia’s Prabowo swears in Large Cabinet

“What we need to realize [is] that Prabowo will inherit democratic environment that is worse compared to ten years ago. I do really wish that Prabowo will have the incentive to prove that ‘okay, I’m a president who uphold the commitment to democracy’, but his [Prabowo’s] track record does not support that” ucap Dr. Yoes Kenawas.
